FUTURE MSU GRADUATE STUDENT
GRADUATE ADMISSION PROCEDURE
FALL SEMESTER, 2018
The Department of Statistics and Probability will begin accepting graduate applications for Fall 2018 on
October 1, 2017.
The application for admission, application fee, and all required supporting documents
should be received no later than
February 1, 2018.
For full consideration of fellowship opportunities, applications should be received
by
December 1, 2017.
A complete application consists
of:
- MSU Graduate Application at http://grad.msu.edu/apply/online.aspx
Our majors are:
(3871) MS Applied Statistics; (3875) MS Statistics; (3877) PhD Statistics
- Application to the Department of Statistics and Probability, which you complete
by logging into http://www.admissions.msu.edu/gradportal using your applicant
ID and password issued when you completed the MSU Graduate Application.
- Three letters of recommendation are required and these are included in the Graduate Portal also. There
is a place for you to list the name and email of your recommenders and they will
be contacted and asked to upload a letter for you. Do not have hard copy letters
of recommendation mailed. They must be submitted through the Graduate Portal.
- Advanced Mathematics Profile (Click here for link; upload in
Graduate Portal)
- Statement of Purpose (Upload in
Graduate Portal)
- Official transcripts of all college work (undergraduate and graduate), including
diplomas and certificates. These are to be sent to our Department directly from
the school(s) which you attended.
Chinese Applicants: Please go to https://grad.msu.edu/cdgdc for transcript verification instructions. The Department of Statistics and Probability does not reimburse for CDGDC verification expenses.

There is no need to send more than one transcript. We will forward the original
transcript to the Office of Admissions.
- GRE – The GRE test is required. Sub tests are not required. Test Scores are submitted
to the Michigan State University Graduate Admissions Office by the Educational Testing
Service. The Institutional Code for MSU is 1465. No department code is necessary.
- TOEFL Scores (for International Students Only) Test Scores are submitted to the
Michigan State University Graduate Admissions Office by the Educational Testing
Service. The Institutional Code for MSU is 1465. No department code is necessary.
Please note that the Department of Statistics and Probability requires TOEFL and
we do not accept other language tests.
The minimal TOEFL scores required for regular admission are:
Reading 19; Listening 19, Speaking 19, Writing 22. Plus 1 more point on any of these
topics to make a total of 80 points.
THE TOEFL TEST IS VALID FOR 2 YEARS FROM THE DATE OF THE TEST TO THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS FOR THE ADMIT SEMESTER. FOR FALL SEMESTER 2018 THAT WOULD BE AUGUST 29, 2018.
- Affidavit of Support (only for International Students who are not applying for an
assistantship) Your Affidavit of Support along with a certified bank statement may
be uploaded into the Graduate
Portal.
You may upload a resume or other academic documents if you wish but these are not
required.
Applications are accepted for Fall Semester only. We do not accept
applications for Spring Semester.
You will be able to check your application status through the
Graduate Portal.
